May 2024, NO.23

Hi, how are you?

In this issue, we will introduce the formulation for Sun Shield Powder, a loose powder featuring powerful UV protection with SPF50 and PA++++, as well as a smooth and soft feeling.

To achieve the powerful UV protection of Sun Shield Powder (SPF50 PA4+), three UV blocking raw materials from SUNJIN are used: SUNZnO-OLEO200(rod-shape Zinc Oxide), T80-TINA(Non-nano Titanium Dioxide), and SUNSIL-S.

SUNSIL-S is an encapsulated material where the organic UV filter BEMT (Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine) is encapsulated in silica.
By using SUNSIL-S instead of BEMT, the powder achieves a superior feel.

Additionally, the SUNSIL-LUX series with excellent flowability, is used in the loose powder. The SUNSIL-LUX series features silica with a pearly and smooth surface, providing a silky application and excellent transparency.

Sun Shield Powder is a loose powder formulation featuring smooth application and powerful UV protection by incorporating the silica encapsulated product SUNSIL-S and the SUNSIL-LUX150H, known for its silky feel and superior transparency.

SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE Enhances Quality Competitiveness with Introduction of State-of-the-Art Q-SEM Equipment!

By Ko, Eunyoung
Translated By Lee, James
May 2024, NO.22

Hi, how are you?

To enhance quality competitiveness and promptly respond to the latest regulations, SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE has introduced a state-of-the-art equipment.

SEM stands for Scanning Electron Microscopy, which is an electron microscope that scans the surface of a sample with an electron beam, allowing direct observation of its three-dimensional structure. NMPA of China requires SEM data on particle size as mandatory information when registering substances on the ‘Cosmetic Ingredient Safety Information Notification Platform’. As a result, the importance of SEM data is increasing globally, including Europe.

Additionally, the newly introduced equipment is a SEM machine with even more advanced capabilities than those used at professional research institutions. It is capable of performing Q-SEM(Quantitative Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis. Q-SEM is a technique that, in addition to the imaging function of SEM, allows for quantitative analysis of particle size. Through the equipment, the microscopic structure and particle size distribution of powders can be measured accurately.

The French authorities have adopted Q-SEM as the analytical method to identify nano materials, and the revised COSMOS V4 also requires the submission of Q-SEM data as a mandatory requirement for material registration, highlighting the growing importance of this technique.

Starting from June 1st, SUNJIN plans to sequentially conduct SEM analysis on all of our products. Having the capability for prompt analysis of our own products will allow us to develop more competitive products and provide you with enhanced quality products.

Sunjin Beauty Science Obtained Indonesia Halal Certification!

By Kim, Yongsung
Translated By Ko, Eunyoung
May 2024, NO.21

Hi, How are you?

In this issue, we are pleased to introduce the “Indonesia MUI Halal Certification that Sunjin obtained in April.

Halal products are products produced from halal materials in facilities that are not cross-contaminated or associated with Haram materials.

Halal: Sanctioned under Islamic Shaira law
Haram: Forbidden or proscribed by Islamic law

Indonesian Halal certification is one of the world’s top three Halal certifications. According to the Halal Product Assurance Law No. 33 of 2014 and the Implementing Regulation No. 31 of 2019, certification becomes mandatory from October 17, 2024.

The Halal certification obligation law applies to all products handled, distributed, and sold within Indonesia, excluding products that cannot obtain Halal certification.

Starting in October 2024, it will initially apply to food and beverage products, and in 2026, it will extend to cosmetics and consumer goods, and by 2029, it will also include pharmaceuticals.

Additionally, it applies to all functional products that are worn, used, and utilized.

A total of 185 products have been assessed and received an A grade for their technical, scientific, and religious aspects. Consequently, we obtained the certification from the Indonesian government’s Halal Certification Authority (BPJPH) and the Halal Confirmation Certificate from the MUI Fatwa Committee.

Therefore, by using Sunjin’s ingredients certified by the Indonesian Halal certification, the process of assessing the halal suitability of each ingredient for certification can be more smoothly conducted.

According to Sunjin’s internal halal policy, we are committed to providing halal-certified ingredients for all products, except those that cannot obtain halal certification, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction and value.

SUNSIL-S, The Next-Generation UV Blocking Material Unveiled with Innovative Silica Capsule Technology

By Jeong, Areum
Translated By Lee, James
April 2024, NO.19

Hi, how are you?

In this issue, we will introduce SUNSIL-S, a silica capsule product that allows the customers to create light feeling formulations with high UV protection by using chemical UV filters(BEMT) in water phase, typically used in oil phase.

SUNSIL-S is a raw material in which the chemical UV filter BEMT(Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine) is encapsulated in silica. By using it in the water phase, light-feeling suncare formulations can be developed. As the successor to the Hybrid series(PMMA capsules) which has been sold more than 40MT annually since its patent application in 2007, SUNSIL-S is a product incorporated with silica instead of PMMA, making it a microplastic-free product.

Most chemical UV filters need to be used in oil phase, but SUNSIL-S can be used in water phase. This allows UV filters to be incorporated into both the oil and water phases of a formulation, thereby maximizing the UV protection efficacy.

Furthermore, since SUNSIL-S provides a light and smooth skin feel, it is ideal for use in O/W sun gel formulations that need to limit the oil phase. This make it possible to create a light feeling SPF50 & PA++++ sun gel formulations without the need to use ethanol.

SUNSIL-S is a silica capsule product containing 30% of BEMT, allowing for a lighter skin feeling and higher UV protection performance.

If you have any inquiries related to SUNSIL-S, please feel free to contact us.

By Jeong, Areum
Translated By Ko, Eunyoung
April 2024, NO.18

Hi, How are you?

Are you currently experiencing difficulties due to recent supply instability of TiO2 in the market? If so, we would like to introduce our TX-85 series, a nano-sized TiO2 product, to alleviate any supply concerns you may have.

The TX-85 series is a product designed to minimize supply issues for customers experiencing difficulties due to recent TiO2 supply instability in the market. Through collaboration with our raw material suppliers, we have developed this solution to address your concerns.

Available in three versions depending on the coating type, you can choose according to your specific requirements:

TX-85: Dimethicone coated TiO2
TX-85AS: Alkyl Silane coated TiO2
TX-85SA: Natural Stearic Acid coated TiO2

In addition, the TX-85 series offers excellent photostability. We have observed a smaller change in the Yellow index value compared to other TiO2 products after exposure to UV lamp for one hour.

Lastly, the TX-85 series demonstrates excellent dispersibility. After dispersing the product in five different types of oils, we observed that the viscosity was lower compared to other competitive products, indicating superior dispersibility of the TX-85 series.

The newly released TX-85 series is a nano-sized TiO2 product that is available without supply concerns, offering excellent photostability and dispersibility. Furthermore, it provides improved UV protection compared to the previous TX-85.

If you have any inquiries, feel free to contact us.

The Deadline for Registration of Cosmetic Facilities and Listing of Products is Approaching!

By Kim, Yongsung
Translated By Lim, Julia
April 2024, NO.17

Hi, how are you?

Starting from July 2nd, the regulations regarding facility registration and product listing under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA) by the United States FDA will come into effect.

The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) in the United States is a special law enacted to supplement the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C) of 1938.

This law aims to expand the authority of the FDA over cosmetic regulation and strengthen the responsibilities of cosmetic manufacturers and sellers regarding product safety and compliance with relevant laws. It officially came into effect on December 29, 2023.

On November 8, 2023, the FDA announced a six-month extension for the enforcement of regulations regarding facility and product registration, extending the deadline from December 29, 2023, to July 1, 2024.

The purpose of this extension, as stated by the FDA, is to provide additional time for relevant industries to prepare for regulatory compliance.

Therefore, starting from July 2nd, all facilities manufacturing or processing cosmetics for sale in the US market must be registered with the FDA, and specific information including facility registration numbers, ingredients, and labeling must be submitted.

For detailed explanation on registration, please refer to the guidelines issued by the FDA.

We are in the process of establishing new facilities based on the experience of getting the highest grade, NAI(No Action Indicated), from FDA inspections for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients(APIs).

From next year, these facilities will enable us to offer products of the highest standard that meet the requirements of cosmetics regulatory authorities worldwide, including the United States.

If you have any inquiries, please feel free to contact us.

The Sand Grain’s Journey: Silica from Mother Nature

By Lim, Julia
April 2024, NO.16

Hi, how are you?

At In-cosmetics Global 2024, there will be various events in the Sustainability Zone. Especially, sustainability theatre presentations are dedicated to showcasing the latest advancements and achievements in sustainable beauty, with expert keynote speakers and ingredient suppliers.

Sunjin Beauty Science became the first company in Korea to speak at this event!

Dr.Sungho Lee, CEO of Sunjin Beauty Science, will speak about ‘The Sand Grain’s Journey: Silica from Mother Nature’, which is about sustainable silica.

The presentation explores the remarkable journey of a silica grain, from the pristine beaches of Australia to its application in our innovative beauty products and, ultimately, its return to nature.

We will mainly talk about our silica bead series, which begins with silica sand, meticulously collected from the Cape Flattery Silica Sand Mine in Australia.

After being collected from nature, through a series of well-defined processes, sand grains will be transformed into high-quality silica beads specifically designed for use in the cosmetics industry.

These silica beads become integral components of various beauty products, delivering exceptional texturizing and soft-focus effects for our discerning consumers.

Once the product reaches the end of its life cycle, the silica naturally returns to the ocean floor and contributes to the formation of new sediments.

Over time, these sediments are compressed and transformed into new rock formations, and through natural geological processes, these rocks eventually erode, giving rise to new sand grains, ready to begin the cycle anew.

Full Version of Chinese Cosmetic Safety Evaluation Report to be Implemented from May 1, 2024!

By Kim, Yongsung
Translated By Ko, Eunyoung
April 2024, NO.14

Hi, How are you?

In this issue, we will explain the Safety Evaluation Report requirements outlined in the “Technical Guideline for Cosmetic Safety Assessment” announced by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China.

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China announced the “Technical Guideline for Cosmetic Safety Assessment” on April 9, 2021.

Accordingly, starting from January 1, 2022, it was required to conduct cosmetic safety evaluations for both general and special cosmetics and submit evaluation reports.

Currently, for product registration and approval, submitting the simplified version of the safety assessment report is sufficient. However, starting from May 1st, 2024, the full version of the safety assessment report must be submitted.

In the full version, particular attention must be given to conducting safety assessments for all ingredients used in the formulation. Toxicological information for each ingredient should be obtained for hazard identification, and the hazardous characteristics of the ingredients, including safety margin* calculations, must be described.

* The safety margin is used to determine the risk or relative degree of hazard of a specific substance by dividing the value obtained from animal studies by the amount to which actual human exposure occurs.

As global standards for cosmetic safety assessment are being strengthened, including in China, the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) has announced the official implementation of the cosmetic safety assessment system starting from 2028 to enhance the safety and global competitiveness of domestically produced cosmetics.

We will establish a comprehensive safety assessment system and secure raw material data resources to systematically respond to enhanced cosmetic safety evaluations. Through this, we promise to produce and supply safe products that meet global standards.

If you have any inquiries, please feel free to contact us.
