Edwin Land of Polaroid said about the importance of people who could stand at the intersection of humanities and sciences, and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.

The cosmetic raw material industry has characteristics of both ‘High Technology’ and ‘Fashion’. This means that the cosmetic raw material industry is not all about the technology but it also requires insights into the market and consumers.
Sunjin started by developing standard products that were commonly used in the cosmetic industry. Today the focus has changed to the research and development of outstanding new products that offer performance as the world’s first and only products. This is because the Sunjin team understands ‘High Technology’ intertwined with “Fashion” from consumers’ point of view.
1.Morphology controlling Nanotechnology
In 2002, Sunjin developed manufacturing technologies of spherical nanoparticles. In 2019, Sunjin further explored and successfully developed the world’s first rod type ZnO. Non-nano Rod type ZnO has huge advantages over non-nano sphere type ZnO in the use of sunscreen with higher UV blocking performances and lower in whitening effect, thus excellent transparency.
2. Encapsulation and synthetic technology
Sunjin is developing and manufacturing high quality UV filters with our own technology that combines nanotechnology and micro-technology. The capsule products synthesized using this technology leave less of a white cast and give skin a smooth and soft feel, which are advantages over using inorganic UV filters. Moreover, the capsules reduce skin irritation, which is a disadvantage of organic UV filters.
3. Hectorite based Emulsifier and Thickner
Sunjin has developed surface treated Hectorite for the second time in the world and succeeded in mass production. Using Hectorite technology, Sunjin has successfully developed the world’s first water releasing silicone-free W/O emulsifier based on Hectorite technology, ECODROPGEL.
4. ACTIVE INGREDIENTS DELIVERY SYSTEM
Sunjin is developing diverse skin care materials based on Hectorite technology.
Hectorite platelets can self-assemble into a house of cards structure that can retain various active ingredients. Using this charactertic of Hectorite, Sunjin was able to develop the remarkable active cosmetic ingredient delivery system used in numerous skin care products.
Sunjin has developed Hectorite based active ingredients delivery system as shown in the following Figure. Sunjin treated the Hectorite surface with DDAC and dispersed these materials in oil phase to form Hectogel. Then an emulsifier was further introduced to prepare 2D Hybrid Emulsifier where Ceramide and other active ingredients can be added to prepare our most recent innovative products, CERAPLEX and ACTIVEPLEX.
5. Microbeads Synthesis
Sunjin has been manufacturing both organic and inorganic based micro beads. Along with ‘Microplastic Free’ which is one of the biggest market trends, Sunjin has developed the replacement for the microplastic beads using silica based materials.
6. Surface Treatment Technology
Starting in the 1960s, fatty acid had been the most commonly used surface treatment. However, fatty acid has the problem of hydrolysis due to its ester bonds and unpleasant odor by oxidation. Therefore, most of the surface treatment of cosmetic materials has been replaced by silicone oil from fatty acids since 1980s.
However, these days ‘Silicone-free’ surface treatment is being required as there are high demands for eco-friendly cosmetic materials. Therefore, Sunjin developed surface treatment with fatty alcohol which tightly binds to the surface of the particles with ether bonds for long term stability. Since 2017, Sunjin developed the surface treatment technology with fatty alcohol for the first time in the world.
7. Cosmetic Formulation Technology
Sunjin has developed many innovative formulations such as silicone-free water releasing skin care formulation and Ceramide composed W/O formulation. Formulation and material technologies are highly intertwined and it is very important to know how materials behave in the formulation. When materials are presented in the forms of formulation, materials are much more appealing to the customers as they can visually understand actual application of the materials.
