Silica from Mother Nature

In this issue, I will explain about silica, which is derived from mother nature and is gaining recognition as an environmentally friendly and sustainable ingredient.

Sunjin Beauty Science’s silica, the SUNSIL series, is manufactured using raw materials sourced from the Cape Flattery Silica Mine, located near the eastern coast of Australia.

The Cape Flattery Mine Site has a significant untapped resources of silica sand, estimated to last for the next 100 years. Therefore, it is focused on sustainable resource development, with a priority given to the surrounding natural environment.

Efforts to achieve this include rehabilitating the topsoil at the site by restoring vegetation. After silica sand extraction, natural plant seeds are sown to restore the site to its greenery with trees and vegetation, over a period of 3 to 4 years.

Sunjin Beauty Science also fully supports this effort and promise to use the sustainable silica sand.

New COSMOS-Standard has officially come into effect!

In this newsletter, we will introduce the main contents of 「 New COSMOS-Standard」which has officially come into effect recently, and the ingredients registered by Sunjin Beauty Science.

The ECOCERT Group has revised the COSMOS standard for the first time in 5 years. In 2021, they conducted a public consultation for COSMOS stakeholders, internal and external experts, and existing certified customers.

As a result, the official version of the standard was issued in January 2023, and the application time is different for each type.

In the case of cosmetic raw materials, the new standards apply from products to be registered after June 1, 2023. Also, data of registered ingredients must be updated by December 1, 2024.

For the finished products, the new standards will be applied from June 1, 2024, which is a year later than the raw materials. Certification of existing registered products is valid only when it is produced before December 1, 2025. All cosmetic products manufactured after December 1, 2025 must comply with the new standards.

The revised standards also reflect regulations and trends in the global cosmetic industry, such as Europe’s nano regulations, RSPO certification, sustainable materials and supply chain management.

To keep up with this trend, companies related to the cosmetic industry must prepare policies to practice Green Chemistry in various aspects from now on.

SUNJIN is keep dealing with the requirements of the standards in order to obtain COSMOS certification for not only existing certified products but also more new products.

Currently, about 60 items have been certified so far.
We will continue to supply products for Green Chemistry through the development and production of products that comply the conditions required by the COSMOS standards.

Natural COSMOS TiO2 Dispersion, T80TINA-75AK Global Launch!

 We would like to introduce the natural COSMOS TiO2 dispersion, T80TINA-75AK, which offers significantly improved transparency compared to existing non-nano TiO2 dispersions.

T80TINA-75AK is an upgraded version of the existing SFT85 series, maintaining the non-nano and natural concept while greatly enhancing transparency, stability, and UV performance. By using C9-12 Alkane, alternative of silicone oil with good spreadabilty and light weight, the texture has been improved.

 T80TINA-75AK is a high concentrated dispersion with a higher TiO2 powder content compared to the previous SFT85 series. In order to verify the product’s transparency, the White index value was measured. Despite the increased TiO2 content, T80TINA-75AK showed a similar White index to the SFT85 series, indicating a significantly transparent dispersion. This characteristic is attributed to the improved dispersion of the powder in the oil.

 To verify the UV performance, the TiO2 content in the dispersion was adjusted equally, and in-vitro measurements were conducted for SPF and PA. Both SPF and PA were significantly improved compared to the previous SFT85 series.

SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE Has Been Practicing ESG Management for Three Years through Beach Cleaning!

 SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE has been conducting beach cleaning activities for three years, and is also steadily practicing ESG management, such as installing electric vehicle charging stations.

 Beach cleaning is a campaign aimed at raising awareness of ocean and coastal pollution and the need for ocean environmental protection. SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE has been conducting beach cleaning activities for three consecutive years since 2021 as a part of our ESG management for sustainable development.

SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE designated Songlim Beach, which is located in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, as our companion beach, and sponsored the college student environmental cleanup activity ‘Beach Expedition’ in 2021.
In 2022 and 2023, SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE has been carrying out coastal purification activities through beach cleaning activities on a consistent basis.

 In addition, SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE installed eight electric vehicle charging stations at Janghang campus to further promote the use of eco-friendly vehicles and carry out activities to create a better air environment. SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE has expressed its determination to lead ESG management.

MakeUp in Paris exhibition will be held for two days on June 14-15 at Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France.

MakeUp in Paris is an exhibition where you can discover the latest trends in makeup and skincare products. Sunjin Beauty Science will participate in MakeUp in Paris as an OEM/ODM company!

The skincare formulations are composed of various types using the self-emulsifiable oil Aqua series and the Skin Barrier Line using ceramides as a skin barrier strengthening ingredient.

 We are introducing a formulation that is in line with the clean beauty trend. Long-lasting Silicone-free foundation formula that maintains your make up for a long time.

 To develop a silicone-free foundation, silicone-free emulsifier, silicone-free pigments, and silicone-free elastomers are necessary. For this formulation, MLB-Polar was used as a silicone-free emulsifier, TINA series as silicone-free pigment, and SFGEL-M as silicon-free elastomer.

 To demonstrate the long-lasting effect, we conducted a simple hydrophobicity test by putting 1g of foundation in water. Unlike other foundation products that blend with water immediately, the silicone-free foundation developed by SUNJIN clearly separates from water and maintain its hydrophobic characteristics.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who visited Sunjin’s booth during in-cosmetics global 2023, which was held in Barcelona, Spain from March 28^th to 30^th.

For those who couldn’t attend in-cosmetics global this year, we would like to briefly introduce the two most popular products showcased at the Sunjin’s booth during the exhibition period.

The first product, SFGEL series, is a new natural elastic gel with a clean beauty concept that can provide a luxurious texture to various emulsion products. It is a silicone-free product that can make the skin appear smoother and has excellent spreadability.

The second product, AQUA Oil series, is a nano-emulsion that can be easily dispersed in water without the use of high-pressure homogenizers or heating process. It has gained much attention from customers due to its ability to be easily incorporated and applied to a wide range of formulations.

How to make the skincare formulation absorb quickly

Today we will introduce the way to make your skin care formulations absorb quickly.

Consumers tend to believe that skincare products need to absorb quickly to immediately moisturize their skin, so developing products with fast absorption is important.

As a result of checking the complete absorption time by adding 4% micro beads to each O/W essence, it was checked that porous PMMA was absorbed the fastest. This is because porous PMMA has a hydrophobic and large specific surface area, which promotes the evaporation of volatile ingrdients in the formulation.

As a result of tests using various microbeads, formulations were quickly absorbed within 15 seconds when using microbeads with hydrophobic surfaces such as SUNSIL-OLEO20, a cetyl alcohol-coated silica or a porous PMMA like SUNPMMA-P20.

Actually, fast absorption means volatile ingredients such as water and alcohol in the formulation evaporate. However, consumers tend to think that the product’s fast absorption equals to immediate moisturize effect of the product. Due to this perception, it would make the products more appealing by using microbeads with hydrophobic surfaces such as the SUNSIL-OLEO series.
