Experts predicted it, and now it is confirmed: the sunny beaches of the Florida Keys will no longer allow the use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Does this mean California is next?
According to a report by the Miami Herald, by a 6-1 vote, the Key West, Florida, City Commission banned the sale in the city limits of sunscreens that contain these ingredients.
The ban will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2021.
The report states the ban was instated based on studies showing these materials are harming the coral reef ecosystem in the Florida Keys. The regulatory effort aims to protect the only living coral reef in North America from alleged bleaching, DNA damage and death; notably, several industry experts have discounted the reported connections made between these sunscreens and coral reef damage, citing global warming as a more likely cause. In defense of these moves, Mayor Teri Johnston stated, “We have one reef, and we have to do one small thing to protect that. It’s our obligation.”
“Oxybenzone is an oil and it floats on the surface,” added Patrick Rice, chief science and research officer at Florida Keys Community College. “These items should be banned as they have no place in our waters in the Florida Keys.”
“It’s not really not an emotional issue; it’s really just science,” said Joe DiNardo, a toxicologist who worked on the Hawaiian ban. “It’s hard to do something about global warming. 워터 드롭 제형은 바르는 순간 물이 터져 나오는 시각적 효과로 국내 소비자들의 꾸준한 사랑을 받아 왔으며, 이러한 인기는 국내뿐 아니라 글로벌 업체에서도 제품 출시가 잇따르는 등 글로벌하게 확장되고 있습니다. 기존의 W/S Water Drop 제형은 대부분 cross linked silicone으로 안정성을 잡아 주며, 피부 도포 시 수분을 방출하는 구조로 되어 있습니다. 그러나 최근 국내와 해외에서 실리콘 성분의 인체에 대한 유해성이 다양하게 보고되고 있으며, 이로 인하여 화장료에 대한 사용이 유럽을 시작으로 제한되고 있는 실정입니다. 이에 따라 실리콘 성분을 사용하지 않으면서도 수분 방출 효과를 가지는 W/O WATER DROP 제형에 대한 개발이 절실히 요청되고 있었습니다.

OBJECTIVE

WATER DROP 제형의 안정성을 잡아주는 cross linked silicone을 대신하여, 자사에서는 “선택적 졸, 겔 전이가 가능한 회합형 헥토라이트 나노플레이트(attractive hectorite nanoplates, AHNPs)” 소재를 개발하여 W/O WATER DROP 제형의 안정성을 확보하고자 합니다.

APPROACHES

판형 구조를 지니는 헥토라이트는 표면적이 넓고, 높은 양이온 교환 용량 (cation exchange capacity)을 보유하고 있으며, 판모서리간의 수소 결합에 의하여 3차원 하우스 오브 카드 (house of cards) 회합구조체를 형성합니다. 이러한 헥토라이트의 특성을 이용하여 자사에서는 AHNPs를 개발하여, 기존의 실리콘 베이스의 W/S 워터 드롭 시스템에 사용하던 크로스 링크된 실리콘을 대체하고 W/O 형 유화제(Polygryceril 계열 유화제)와 결합시켜 유화 입자를 다면체 구조로 감싸서 안정적인 실리콘 프리 W/O WATER DROP 제형을 가능하게 하였습니다.
