1 Year after the Island Ban

In this issue, we would like to update you on the Island Ban 1 year after it came into effect.

Hawaii banned the sale of over-the-counter sunscreens containing Oxybenzone and Octinoxate in order to protect Hawaii’s marine environment from January 1st, 2021.

Major brands at CVS like Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena sell sprays without Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. This is mainly because they reformulated their sunscreens without these two chemicals. Other companies decided not to sell sunscreens containing these two chemicals in Hawaii. 

Most consumers appear to be in favor of the ban and want it to help prevent damage to coral reefs and marine environment. This trend is expected to continue, and the inorganic sunscreen market is expected to grow further.

O/W Mineral Filter Only Sun Cream Formulation by Sunjin

Today we would like to introduce a O/W Mineral Filter Only Sun Cream Formulation that features a light texture.

The O/W Sun Cream Formulation with SPF50 PA4+ was developed using mineral filters only. Mineral sunscreens usually leave a white cast on skin, but this formulation provides high transparency. It also provides a light texture as an O/W formulation compared to W/O formulation.

We used SUNCLEAR-Z50(K) and Z65M as main UV filters in this formulation.

SUNCLEAR-Z50(K) is an Alkyl Benzoate based 15nm ZnO dispersion. The nano ZnO provides excellent UV protection and high transparency. Z65M, which is a Caprylic Capric Triglyceride based 150nm ZnO dispersion, was also usedto enhance the UV performance.

Correlation between Aerodynamic diameter and TiO2 carcinogen issue?

In this week’s issue, we would like to provide information about the correlation between aerodynamic diameter and carcinogen issue of TiO2. Aerodynamic Diameter is the diameter of a sphere of the same particle density having the same terminal velocity in air or some other relevant fluid. It only reflects the sinking behavior of a particle under certain assumptions, so there is no direct correlation to the physical appearance of the particle.

In September 2021, ECHA published a guide on the classification and labeling of TiO2. According to the guide, the substance TiO2 must be classified as a carcinogen if inhaled when supplied on its own or in mixtures, where the substance or mixture contains 1% or more of TiO2 particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10μm.

Substances classified as carcinogen group must be labeled with the above pictogram GHS08.

Sunjin conducted testing in accordance with standard EN 15051-2+A1-2016 and concluded our products that contain TiO2 are not classified as carcinogen 2 group.
