In the September issue of a Korean cosmetics magazine ‘THE K BEAUTY SCIENCE’, an interview with Songhwa Hyun, a team leader at Sunjin Beauty Science Research Institute was published. It is titled “Zinc oxide dispersion, attractive  sunscreen ingredient as a clean beauty trend”

Clean beauty does not contain harmful ingredients and is environmentally friendly. In recent years, clean beauty has become increasingly popular as consumers are more likely to seek products that align with their values.

Songhwa Hyun, a team leader of Research Institute presented a poster paper titled “Development and formulation application of Zinc Oxide dispersion with excellent transparency and sun protection performance” at the SCSK(Society of cosmetic scientists of Korea) Spring Academic Conference in May 2023. She explained the background of the study in relation to clean beauty.

Due to research results that chemical UV filters cause coral bleaching, mineral UV filters are attracting attention. However, there has been little research on Zinc Oxide with a bimodal or multi-modal particle distribution.

This study was conducted to manufacture a dispersion by mixing Zinc Oxide with different particle sizes in the optimal ratio to maximize transparency and sun protection performance, and to develop a O/W sunscreen product with high sun protection performance using it.

The sun protection performance of Zinc Oxide with different particle sizes was superior to that of single particles, and the highest sun protection performance was observed when the mixing ratio was 5:5 of 15nm ZnO:105nm ZnO.
When spherical zinc oxide particles with different particle sizes are mixed, large particles are randomly dispersed among most small particles resulting in a uniform arrangement with almost no voids between large particles. This leads to high sun protection performance and high transparency.
