In this second newsletter on silica, one of the key ingredients in cosmetic formulations, we are pleased to introduce its role as a carrier that protects and delivers active ingredients.
Leveraging our expertise in silica production, encapsulation, and coating technologies, Sunjin Beauty Science has developed SUNSIL-S, in which the chemical UV filter (BEMT) is encapsulated into porous silica.
This research was published in the SCI journal Microporous and Mesoporous Materials, demonstrating that our UV capsule technology is recognized at a world-class level.

1.Patented UV Capsule Manufacturing Technology
Sunjin Beauty Science holds a patented technology for loading and coating the chemical UV filter (BEMT) into porous silica with precisely controlled pore size and surface area.
Through this technology, SUNSIL-S can stably incorporate up to 30 wt% of BEMT, while effectively preventing precipitation or leakage and ensuring uniform dispersion within the pores.

2. Superior Photostability and UV Protection
When encapsulated within silica, BEMT loses its crystallinity and transitions into an amorphous state. Since amorphous structures generally exhibit stronger resistance to photodegradation, SUNSIL-S delivers significantly enhanced photostability while maintaining high UV protection efficiency.
As a result, compared to formulations containing the same concentration of free BEMT, those utilizing silica-encapsulated BEMT demonstrated greater stability and superior UV protection performance.

3. Enhanced Dispersibility and Formulation Flexibility
Thanks to the coating technology, BEMT remains well-dispersed in water without forming any precipitates. This enables the application of BEMT even in the aqueous phase, thereby broadening formulation possibilities and design flexibility.

4. Lightweight Feel with a Non-Sticky Finish
As BEMT is encapsulated within silica rather than coming into direct contact with the skin, it significantly reduces stickiness and greasiness. In addition, the coated SUNSIL-S minimizes BEMT leakage, improving upon the typically heavy sensory profile of chemical UV filters. The result is a lightweight texture with a clean, non-sticky finish.

5. Easy Washability
Conventional UV filters such as BEMT or DHHB tend to leave yellow stains on fabrics, which are difficult to remove even after multiple washes. In contrast, with SUNSIL-S, BEMT does not come into direct contact with fabrics, preventing staining and ensuring easy washability.
