Hello,

What goals have you set for the year 2026?

At Sunjin Beauty Science, our goal for 2026 is to solve our customers’ technical challenges by delivering products that exceed expectations through thoroughly validated results.

As the starting point of this journey, our first newsletter of the year introduces SH305, a natural silica-based SPF boosting ingredient.

Traditionally, improving SPF performance in sunscreen formulations has focused on

✔︎ Increasing the level of UV filters

✔︎ Optimizing combinations of UV filters.

However, these approaches often come with clear limitations, including compromised sensory feel, whitening effects, and reduced formulation flexibility.

SH305 is a material developed with Sunjin Beauty Science’s proprietary surface roughening technology.

In this issue, we take a closer look at how SH305, a natural silica, functions as an SPF
booste -exploring its mechanism of action and real-world formulation results in detail.

Introduction to SH305

Conventional silica typically has a relatively smooth surface structure and is mainly used in sunscreen formulations to improve sensory feel or absorb sebum.

In contrast, SH305 is designed with an irregular microstructured silica surface, resulting in distinct optical and physical behavior that differentiates it from conventional silica materials.

Key Technology of SH305: Controlled Rough Surface

The surface roughness and micro-textured structure of SH305 do not reflect incoming light in a single direction; instead, they induce multi-directional scattering.

As a result, in the visible light spectrum, a soft-focus effect is created, providing a blurring effect that visually minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and pores on the skin surface.
In the ultraviolet region,
incoming UV radiation is scattered in multiple directions, reducing the concentration of energy on the skin surface.

Consequently, SH305 does not function as a direct UV absorber or blocker. Rather, it acts as a physical auxiliary material that controls the propagation path and energy distribution of UV radiation.

SPF Boosting Effect of SH305

SH305 has demonstrated a consistent SPF boosting effect across various sunscreen systems.

In particular, the largest increase in SPF was observed in organic UV filter–based O/W systems, suggesting that the light-scattering mechanism of SH305 acts synergistically with the absorption mechanism of organic UV filters.

This SPF enhancement is attributed to the controlled rough surface structure and the fine particle size of approximately 2 μm, which scatter UV radiation in multiple directions within the formulation, thereby increasing the optical path length.

In inorganic UV filter systems, SH305 supports an overall improvement in UV-blocking efficiency.
In organic UV filter systems, repeated absorption of scattered UV radiation is enhanced, resulting in a more pronounced SPF boosting effect.

Benefits of SH305 from a Formulation Perspective

As a 100% silica-based material, SH305 offers the following formulation benefits:

✔︎ Enables SPF adjustment without increasing UV filter levels

✔︎ Compatible with both inorganic and organic UV filter systems

✔︎ Provides high formulation flexibility across O/W and W/O systems

✔︎ Allows high-SPF formulation design without compromising sensory feel

✔︎ Delivers a soft-focus effect for visible blurring of wrinkles and pores

✔︎ Supports clean beauty and sustainability trends as a naturally derived ingredient

SH305, developed with Sunjin Beauty Science’s proprietary surface microstructure control technology, is a next-generation physical SPF booster validated by practical performance data across a wide range of sunscreen systems.
