Hello, this is Sunjin Beauty Science.
As interest in mineral-only sun care continues to grow, the sensory experience of sunscreen products is becoming just as important as their UV protection performance.
In TiO₂-free sunscreen formulations, higher concentrations of zinc oxide (ZnO) are often required to achieve the desired level of UV protection. However, increasing ZnO content can lead to poor spreadability, a stiff texture, and a heavy feel on the skin. Therefore, achieving both effective UV protection and smooth, comfortable application remains a key challenge in sunscreen formulation development.
To address these formulation challenges, SUNJIN Beauty Science has been developing Rod-shaped Zinc Oxide (ZnO) technology with a distinctive particle morphology. This research was featured in the October 2026 issue of IFSCC Magazine.
What is IFSCC Magazine?
IFSCC Magazine is a scientific publication issued by the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC), featuring approximately 30 carefully selected research articles in cosmetic science each year.
The featured research on Rod-shaped ZnO is particularly noteworthy, as it was invited for publication from among more than 730 poster presentations at the 2025 IFSCC Congress.
This recognition highlights SUNJIN Beauty Science’s R&D capabilities in Particle Engineering and marks a significant achievement in showcasing its technological expertise to the global cosmetic science community.
Beyond Particle Shape: Engineering Surface Functionality
The performance of cosmetic ingredients depends not only on their chemical composition but also on how particle size, shape, and surface properties are engineered.
Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is a widely used mineral UV filter that provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. SUNJIN Beauty Science has focused on a distinctive rod-shaped structure, developing proprietary mineral UV filters by combining particle shape control with advanced surface modification technology.
SUNJIN Beauty Science has commercialized SUNZnO-200AS, coated with Alkyl Silane, and SUNZnO-200SA, coated with Stearic Acid, offering mineral UV filters suitable for a wide range of cosmetic formulations.
✨ Key Benefits of Rod-shaped Zinc Oxide
* Excellent Spreadability: Delivers smooth and effortless application thanks to its low coefficient of friction.
* Uniform Coverage: Promotes the formation of an even particle layer on the skin.
* Creamy Texture: Reduces stiffness in formulations, providing a soft and comfortable skin feel.
* Potential for Reduced White Cast: Contributes to a more natural-looking finish through uniform particle distribution and application.
* Suitable for Tinted Mineral Sunscreens: Enables formulations with even coverage and smooth spreadability when combined with color pigments.
