The global sun care market-especially the U.S.-is entering a new era.
For decades, strict FDA OTC monograph regulations have limited the use of new UV filters in the U.S., making
it difficult to develop broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreens with the clear, elegant skin feel seen in Europe
and Korea.
Now, that is changing. The U.S. FDA has officially added Bemotrizinol (BEMT) to the sunscreen monograph as a
GRASE active ingredient—the first new UV filter to enter the U.S. market in more than 20 years.
BEMT is one of the most effective broad-spectrum UV filters, delivering outstanding UVA/UVB protection with
excellent photostability. Already trusted in global markets for decades, it has demonstrated a strong safety
profile with minimal skin absorption.
However, every breakthrough comes with a formulation challenge.
Due to its low solubility, BEMT requires a relatively high level of oils to dissolve effectively. At higher
concentrations, it can introduce an oily feel and unwanted tackiness. The real challenge is to maintain
formulation stability while delivering the light, dry-touch sensory experience that U.S. consumers expect.

Achieving high SPF with a lightweight skin feel is not always easy.
To incorporate BEMT at around 3%, more than 30% of the oil phase may be required for proper solubilization.
This can make the formulation feel heavy, greasy, and less appealing for modern sunscreen users.
Conventional formulations dissolve organic UV filters directly into the oil phase, which can increase
greasiness and tackiness.
As the level of BEMT increases, the sunscreen film on the skin tends to become thicker, resulting in a
heavier, less comfortable skin feel.

With BEMT now approved for the U.S. market, Sunjin introduces its innovative solution-“SUNSIL-S45”.
Powered by Sunjin's proprietary encapsulation technology, SUNSIL-S45 stably entraps UV filters within porous silica beads, helping overcome the key formulation challenges associated with BEMT. The result is greater formulation flexibility without compromising performance or sensory feel.
SUNSIL-S45 is designed to help formulators use BEMT more efficiently.
In performance testing, SUNSIL-S45 showed higher SPF performance than conventional BEMT under the same
conditions, while maintaining excellent UVA protection.
For formulators targeting high-SPF sunscreen systems, SUNSIL-S45 offers a powerful new advantage.

By reducing the amount of BEMT that needs to be dissolved directly into the oil phase, SUNSIL-S45 enables
lighter, more comfortable sunscreen formulations.

Beyond encapsulating UV filters, SUNSIL-S45 also helps stabilize formulations at the interface.
In comparative stability testing, conventional BEMT formulations showed phase separation during long-term
storage, while formulations containing SUNSIL-S45 maintained excellent stability.
As SPF levels increase, formulation stability becomes even more critical-and SUNSIL-S45 helps formulators
meet that challenge.

Some organic UV filters can cause yellow staining on clothing and fabrics.
By encapsulating UV filters within porous silica beads, SUNSIL-S45 minimizes direct contact with fabrics. In
washing tests, formulations containing SUNSIL-S45 showed little to no visible staining, even after repeated
laundering.

■ Q1. How is the Silica UV Capsule different from conventional organic UV filters?
Conventional organic UV filters, such as BEMT and Avobenzone, must be dissolved in the oil phase, often
increasing the oil content in O/W formulations. SUNSIL-S45 encapsulates UV filters within porous silica
beads and is dispersed in the water phase, enabling lighter formulations with a fresher skin feel.
■ Q2. Can SUNSIL-S45 be used in both W/O and O/W formulations?
SUNSIL-S45 is designed for O/W formulations and should be dispersed into the water phase. It is not
recommended for W/O systems, as certain oils may dissolve the encapsulated UV filters and compromise
formulation stability.
■ Q3. What types of sunscreen formulations is SUNSIL-S45 suitable for?
SUNSIL-S45 is ideal for a wide range of lightweight O/W sunscreen formats, including creams, fluids,
lotions, and tone-up sunscreens. It is especially well suited for high-SPF and daily sun care formulations
that require a light, comfortable skin feel.

Now is the perfect time to get ready for the next generation of U.S. sun care with SUNSIL-S45, Sunjin’s key
solution for high-performance, stable, and lightweight sunscreen formulations.
