Rod Shape Zinc Oxide: Inspiration Struck on Mount Taebaek in Cold Winter

 We would like to share the untold story behind the development of rod shape Zinc Oxide, the world’s first and currently only commercially produced in SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE.

 We got inspiration for rod shape Zinc Oxide from the hard rime and you can see it which was created by the biting cold this winter.

 The image below shows rod shape Zinc Oxide under the electron microscopy.

 Rod shape Zinc Oxide has been reported in academic papers, but its commercial mass production was considered impossible until now. This is because rod shape Zinc Oxide requires crystal growth in only one direction for mass production.

 Then, what connection might there be between rod shape Zinc Oxide and hard rime?

 The following pictures were taken during a hike on Mount Taebaek in winter in 2021. Mount Taebaek is one of the most beautiful mountains located in Korea.

 Did you notice any differences from typical hard rime formations in the above pictures?

 For some reason, the hard rime on the summit of Mount Taebaek was growing only in one direction.

 If natural formations can grow in one direction in the environment, it’s conceivable that they could also be commercially produced in mass quantity.

 Then, what will be the advantage which rod shape Zinc Oxide has compared to the typical spheroidal shape?

 The phenomenon of crystals growing in one direction termed Epitaxial growth in scientific terms.

ZINA-75AB (Alkyl Benzoate Base) and ZINA-75B (Dibutyl Adipate Base) are dispersions with a high concentration of 75% ZINA series, which feature exceptional transparency due to uniform particle size zinc oxide.

The ZINA dispersion series has powerful UV protection performance. In-vitro test results have shown that it exhibits stronger UV protection compared to other dispersions.

Furthermore, ZINA dispersion maintains a clean white color without discoloration even over time. Therefore, when developing sun care products, ZINA dispersion can be used without concerns about color changes.

Lastly, despite containing 75% powder, ZINA dispersion maintains a low viscosity, maximizing convenience of use.

The ZINA dispersion series is a user-friendly, high-concentration dispersion with top performance and ultimate transparency.

The Sand Grain’s Journey, Silica from Mother Nature

 In this issue, we will introduce silica, which is an abundant, environmental-friendly and sustainable resource.

 Silica is a highly abundant compound which is found in the Earth’s crust. It makes up about 59% of the planet’s total mass. Furthermore, silica is a major component of more than 95% of all known rocks, and most sand is composed of it. Silica is an extremely abundant resource on the Earth.

 SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE’s silica is made from silica sand mined at the Cape Flattery Silica Sand Mine in Australia. The mine has been in operation since 1967 and covers an area of approximately 63 square kilometers. It has a significant amount of silica resources that are still undeveloped. Therefore, there is enough silica to be used for the next 100 years.

 Sand which was existing on Australian beaches crossed the sea and arrived at SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE, where it was manufactured into silica products, the SUNSIL series, and sold to various customers around the world.

 Silica is a renewable resource that can be returned to the nature, unlike micro plastics. Micro plastics end up into the ocean and damage the marine ecosystem, but silica doesn’t harm it as it is a naturally occurred substance.

The Ultimate Transparency: Global launch of the ZINA series!

We are excited to introduce the ZINA series, featuring uniform nano-sized ZnO particles that deliver exceptional performance and transparency.

The ZINA series is launched in two versions based on coating agents: ZINA-AS with Alkyl Silane coating and ZINA-SA with Stearic Acid coating. Moreover, when compared to SUNZnO-NAS and other ZnO products in the market, the ZINA series exhibits unparalleled transparency.

The reason for this is that the ZINA series has a uniform size compared to the conventional SUNZnO-NAS or other ZnO products. In the case of SUNZnO-NAS, occasional larger particles may be present, leading to a lower uniformity compared to the ZINA series.

Furthermore, the ZINA series has high UV protection. In-vitro tests conducted by dispersing it in Alkyl Benzoate revealed a stronger UV protection compared to SUNZnO-NAS and other ZnO products.

Newly applied evaluation criteria at ESG evaluation platform EcoVadis!

In this newsletter, we will introduce you the new EcoVadis assessment criteria that will be applied from 2024, and Sunjin Beauty Sciences’ ESG management performances.

EcoVadis is the world’s largest ESG assessment organization and evaluates the performance of companies in the areas of environment, ethics, labor&human rights, and sustainable procurement.

EcoVadis awards medals and badges to companies based on their sustainability performance to encourage sustainable business practices.

EcoVadis has introduced changed assessment program criteria that will be applied from 2024.

These changes are designed to reflect the latest global sustainability trends and best practices, as well as to inhibit the growing problem of greenwashing.

Sunjin Beauty Science has reached top 39%(Total score 52) in 2022 and top 28%(Total score 58) in 2023.

Solar power is a eco-friendly and sustainable energy source because it generates electricity by using solar energy. Therefore, Sunjin Beauty Science has built a 100kw solar system of about 200 sqm in size to protect the environment and reduce energy costs.

We also installed electric vehicle charging stations and used materials certified by RSPO(Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil).

In 2024, Sunjin Beauty Sciences plans to use electric delivery vehicles services and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) policies to achieve zero carbon emissions in logistic.

Also, we are planning to establish a greenhouse gas inventory and implement carbon reduction by 2025 as part of its commitment to ESG management.

 After SUNSIL-LUX150H’s launch in 2022, the successor to the highly acclaimed SUNSIL-LUX150H is set to be launched, garnering significant attention from customers worldwide.

 The newly introduced SUNSIL-LUX130 and SUNSIL-LUX150 feature a more compact design and reduced absorption capacity compared to their predecessors.

 SUNSIL-LUX series features silica with a smooth texture like pearl surface and excellent transparency. Moreover, its high fluidity allows for the development of formulations that flow smoothly like water when formulated in loose powder.

 The existing product, SUNSIL-LUX150H, has the particle size as of 13μm and the absorption capacity as of 1.4~2.1cc/g. However, we have introduced a smaller-sized product with reduced absorption capacity in response to the customer’s demand. You can choose the most suitable product for your own specific needs in various formulations.

 SUNSIL-LUX series stands out with its exceptionally clean surface compared to other silica products in the market. It is achieved through a unique manufacturing process exclusive to SUNSIL-LUX series.

 SUNSIL-LUX series offers an astonishingly smooth texture and transparency due to its clean surface.
In fact, SUNSIL-LUX150H had the most transparency when mixed with 0.2g of silica and 19.8g of MCT oil.

 Furthermore, when we compare the case with use of 2g of silica in sun care formulations, we could develop a more transparent formulation with SUNSIL-LUX150H. The new products, SUNSIL-LUX130 and SUNSIL-LUX150, maintain the advantages of the existing product(SUNSIL-LUX150H) while satisfying the various needs of our customers.

Experience the soothing gel with ultimate hydration!

In this issue, we will introduce the soothing gel that maximizes moisturizing power by incorporating the AQUA series.

The AQUA Oil series is an advanced micro-emulsion ingredient that enables the easy dispersion and utilization of moisturizing natural oils in the water phase without the necessity of high-pressure homogenizers or heating processes.

We have developed a soothing gel by incorporating 2.02% of AQUA Oil into the existing soothing gel, maximizing its moisturizing power. The results of TEWL(TransepidermalWater Loss) measurements have shown significant improvement compared to the traditional soothing gel formulation.

Below is the data showing the Deep Skin Penetration effect of AQUA Oil using 3D Raman Spectroscopy. You can observe that Micro Emulsion penetrates more deeply into the skin compared to Macro Emulsion.

SUNSIL-OLEO Series, A New Standard of Natural Lipophilic Silica

In this letter, I will introduce the advantages of natural lipophilic silica, SUNSIL-OLEO Series.

SUNSIL-OLEO series is a material with lipophilic characteristics, which is treated with Cetyl Alcohol on both interior and exterior side of naturally derived silica. Because it is processed with Cetyl Alcohol, it has a much softer feel than the regular silica.

Also, it has the characteristics of absorbency and lipophilicity, it can keep the skin’s moisture and selectively absorb sebum. Based on these characteristics, SUNSIL-OLEO series can be used as a substitute for porous PMMA.

 In fact, as a result of testing using various micro beads, it was possible to show the effect that the formulation was absorbed quickly within 15 seconds when using a hydrophobic micro bead such as 2um sized SUNSIL-OLEO20.

Therefore, if you use the SUNSIL-OLEO series, you can get the following advantages.
• Selectively absorbs sebum

• Excellent feel due to soft use

 First of all, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our customers for their love and support for SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE throughout 2023, and for their interest and support in our newsletter.

 This year was a meaningful year for SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE as well. We participated in a total of 12 exhibitions in various countries, making efforts to promote SUNJIN BEAUTY SCIENCE by meeting with more customers than ever before.

 Furthermore, we actively engaged in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) activities, including a $10,000 donation to support Turkiye, which was facing difficulties due to an earthquake, and conducting beach cleanups. Additionally, as the first Korean cosmetics raw material manufacturer to introduce a Raman spectrometer, we continued our efforts in quality and sustainability through initiatives such as RSPO certification renewal and the implementation of halal policies.

 As a result of our focused efforts on online marketing activities, we achieved significant success in maintaining a Kakaotalk channel with over 1,400 friends and a WeChat channel with over 1,900 friends.

 In 2024, we will continue to make efforts to reach our customers through a variety of online and offline activities.

 We hope you finish the remaining days of 2023 in good health and happiness, and may the upcoming year, 2024, be a year of even greater growth for you.
